Lesson Plan Photo Stories

For Grades: 3 - 8

Materials needed:
Computers, Internet access, access to Flickr, presentation software (Google Slides, PowerPoint, Photo Story For Windows, etc.)

Objectives:
Students will select photos on Flickr.Students will write a narrative story using selected photos.
Students will evaluate other student essays and construct feedback.

Lesson:
Students will work on a computer to find different pictures of wildlife, artwork, or buildings using Flickr to create a narrative based on their chosen pictures based on a theme.

Activity:1. Place students in small groups to work together to find pictures that they like in Flickr. Remind students that the pictures need to encourage creative thinking so they can come up with good stories. Students are placed in groups so that those more proficient with the skills needed can help those that are not as sure of themselves.2. Once a group has several pictures selected, cited and downloaded students can chose which picture they will use for their own story.3. At this point students work independently on creating their stories using presentation software (e.g., Google Slides, PowerPoint, Photo Story for Windows, etc). Remind students about the requirements of a narrative.4. Students edit with another group member using their editing checklists.5. Students go back to their groups and each student shares their picture and story with the group. The group members give feedback including positives and something that the student can change or add to make their story better.6. Students make any last minute changes to their stories.7. All stories are published to a Schoology page so the class members can read and respond to all the stories. Remind the students that at this point all responses should be of a positive nature since the story is finished.
Optional: Creating Random Photo Stories with Five Card Flickr
  • Five Card Flickr randomly shows 5 rounds of photos to choose, then you write a story about the pictures by putting them together. When you choose your pictures, you can start writing your story by making a connection among the five pictures. When you are done, you can tweet or email your story. You can also get an embed code to use it on your blog.
  • Example: http://5card.cogdogblog.com//show.php?id=41158

Advanced Options:
  • To build support across disciplines or creativity, use pictures uploaded by artists at the school (or within the district). Additionally, students could load their own artistic photos in class and students could pick pictures taken by their peers. This also may create a very nice post-assignment discussion.
  • Use this assignment to assess multiple skills. For example, if teaching connectives or how to transition when writing, a student could start writing a story about one picture, and then have to transition to and finish the story on a different picture, perhaps chosen by a classmate.

Review/Assessment: Students present their story to the class
